Naked Objects “Most people who believe they are doing object-oriented design and development are doing no such thing, because they are ignoring the most important principle of object-orientation. We describe that principle as 'behavioural completeness': an object should completely model the behaviour of the thing that it represents. Instead, most people continue to design business systems that separate procedure from data, albeit dressed up in the language and technology of object-orientation.

Why is this distinction important? Because behavioural completeness is the key to realising the principal benefit of object-orientation: the ability to cope with unforeseen changes in requirements.”

D-BUS “At the protocol level D-BUS can be used as a peer-to-peer message transport for applications to communicate directly with each other. The real power of D-BUS comes from the bus daemons which act as routers for messages. There are two standard buses that a developer can rely on always being around. These are the system bus and the session bus.

The system bus is a global daemon that any application running in any context can use as a transport. It is a single point where applications can export services that anyone can use. Only one system bus daemon can be run at a time.

The session bus is a bus local to the current user's session. It is used for communication between applications running within the same X session. For every login to X, a session bus daemon is started.”

The Myth of Superman “For Superman, it's mild-mannered reporter Clark Kent thats the disguise the thing he aspires to, the thing he can never be. He really is that hero, and he will never be one of us. But we love him for trying. We love him for wanting to protect us from everything, including his own transcendence. He plays the bumbling, lovelorn Kent so that we regular folks can feel, just for a moment, super.”

“An old Cherokee was teaching his grandchildren about life. He said to them, ”A battle is raging inside me ... it is a terrible fight between two wolves. One wolf represents fear, anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority and ego. The other stands for joy, peace, love, hope, sharing, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, friendship, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith.“

The old man fixed the children with a firm stare. ”This same fight is going on inside you, and inside every other person, too.“

They thought about it for a minute and then one child asked his grandfather, ”Which wolf will win?“

The old Cherokee replied: ”The one you feed."

Concatenative language “There are two terms that get thrown around, stack language and concatenative language. Both define similar but not equal classes of languages. For the most part though, they are identical.

Stacks are a pretty fundamental concept in computer science, and many languages use stacks internally in the implementation. Any language that allows recursive definitions uses some type of call stack to save return addresses between function calls, and often the same stack is used to spill values which cannot be allocated in registers. However, this is just implementation detail, and this call stack is not exposed directly to the programmer (except in languages with first-class continuations; I'll touch upon this later).

So what makes stack languages different? The key concept here is that there are multiple stacks: all stack languages have a call stack to support recursion, but they also have a data stack (sometimes called an operand stack) to pass values between functions. The latter is what stack language programmers mean when they talk about "the" stack.

Most languages in widespread use today are applicative languages: the central construct in the language is some form of function call, where a function is applied to a set of parameters, where each parameter is itself the result of a function call, the name of a variable, or a constant. In stack languages, a function call is made by simply writing the name of the function; the parameters are implicit, and they have to already be on the stack when the call is made. The result of the function call (if any) is then left on the stack after the function returns, for the next function to consume, and so on. Because functions are invoked simply by mentioning their name without any additional syntax, Forth and Factor refer to functions as "words", because in the syntax they really are just words.”

Do you want to know how rich you are ?

HAL “Traditionally, desktop applications discovered hardware by talking directly to the operating system kernel (the kernel maintains the list of devices attached to the system). This is a tedious process and is not exact because sometimes the kernel doesn't know everything about a device. For example, some digital cameras and portable music players show up as just another hard disk in the user interface. Thus, not many user interfaces have been built for hardware discovery.

With HAL, all the interesting information about certain classes of hardware is easily accessible in a well-defined format. When a new device is added to the system, an asynchronous signal is broadcast on the system message bus detailing what kind of device was added.”

Container classes “You can't, but you can fake it pretty well. In C/C all arrays are homogeneous (i.e., the elements are all the same type). However, with an extra layer of indirection you can give the appearance of a heterogeneous container (a heterogeneous container is a container where the contained objects are of different types).”

Ruby Programming Language Enables Concise Network Programming “Not only is Ruby a high-performance programming language that minimizes software development and maintenance costs, but writing software in it is just fun! Ruby is a very concise programming notation, so you can write programs quickly. The readability of Ruby code also makes it easy to make changes later.”

Quote of the day

BackgrounDRb “BackgrounDRb is a small framework for divorcing long running tasks from Rails request/response cycle. With HTTP it is usually not a very good idea to keep a request waiting for a response for long running actions. BackgrounDRb also allows for status updates that in combination with ajax can render live progress bars in the browser while the background worker task gets completed.”

How brain cells make good connections? It’s a specialty involving vast numbers. There are an estimated 100 billion neurons in the average 3-pound human brain. Connecting them are as many as 10 trillion synapses, the circuitlike chemical pathways that link neurons to one another. “The power of higher brain areas,” said Murthy, “is in numbers.”

How to Design Programs: An Introduction to Computing and Programming

A History of Decision Tables “Tables are easy to read and can convey more information in a smaller space and clearer format than flowcharting, pseudo-code, narratives and other conventional documentation techniques. They are also easier for both analysts and users to construct and alter than conventional system analysis techniques. The non-analyst user can be given an empty decision table and be asked to fill it out himself. He can provide information to the systems analyst which would normally require intensive interviews and a great deal of time to obtain.

Tables can be used to automatically generate source code in any programming language which supports if/then/else or switch/case control constructs. While the time saved by generating code would be worth the effort of learning decision tables, there are other benefits.”

“Some of the greatest mathematical minds of all ages, from Pythagoras and Euclid in ancient Greece, through the medieval Italian mathematician Leonardo of Pisa and the Renaissance astronomer Johannes Kepler, to present-day scientific figures such as Oxford physicist Roger Penrose, have spent endless hours over this simple ratio and its properties. But the fascination with the Golden Ratio is not confined just to mathematicians. Biologists, artists, musicians, historians, architects, psychologists, and even mystics have pondered and debated the basis of its ubiquity and appeal. In fact, it is probably fair to say that the Golden Ratio has inspired thinkers of all disciplines like no other number in the history of mathematics.”

When Linux Runs Out of Memory

An introduction to Ruby/DLX “Now, you can obviously use these great libraries by writing a binding for it in Ruby. This has the advantage that it is fast, however, it requires you to maintain the binding. This means that the binding needs to be updated whenever you or some upstream party updates the C library. This is a real pain, and it also requires you to deploy the updated binding to all the target machines. Because the bindings are written in C, this requires compilation which is not all too great, especially if you consider that ruby is an interpreted language. Part of the fun of programming in ruby is that you don't need to recompile. Wouldn't it be great if you could just import C library calls in Ruby directly ?”
